LA for YOUTH

The “LA For Youth” Campaign is uniting youth, our families, teachers, youth workers and community interventionists to create a strong , innovative and sustainable Youth Development plan for L.A. City and County that will fund, advocate for and support youth jobs, intervention workers/peacebuilders in our streets and schools, and youth centers open year-round from 3pm to midnight.

Just 1% of Los Angeles County’s Law Enforcement budget (LAPD, LA County Sheriff, Probation Department, courts, LA City Attorney, and County District Attorney  = $100 Million a year!

$100 Million would fund 25,000 Youth Jobs + 50 Youth Centers + 500 full-time Community Intervention/Peacebuilders.

IMAGINE.  WE CAN PRIORITIZE YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES OVER YOUTH CAGES!

If you took just 1% of funds going to Los Angeles Police Departments, Sheriff’s Department, District Attorney’s Office and the Probation Department, that is equal to $100 Million (with no job lay-offs). With this $100 Million you could invest in 50 youth centers plus 500 community intervention workers in schools and neighborhoods plus 25,000 youth jobs.

NYC has 50,000 youth jobs and many year-round jobs.

San Francisco’s kids first initiative allocates 3% of budget for youth programs. We want to start with 1% of suppression dollars.

Oakland, San Francisco and New York City all supply free bus / metro passes for students.

California has the nation’s highest unemployment rate with youth in South Central as high as 50% unemployment.

Jobs tied to violence: 10 most dangerous youth jobs as identified by youth at Youth Justice Coalition: slanging, gang banging, sex work, stripping / exotic dancing, landscaping (no workers comp / medical) and McJob – fast food (no medical limited worker’s comp).
